Science

Working together for a successful future

An Introduction to Science at Queensgate

Science at Queensgate is about sparking curiosity and helping children make sense of the world. Through practical investigations and exploration, pupils learn to ask questions, observe closely, and develop key skills in enquiry and reasoning. Science in primary school lays the foundation for understanding important concepts while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and a lifelong interest in the subject.

A Message from Miss Saddington, our Science Subject Leader

At Queensgate, we believe science should spark curiosity, wonder, and a lifelong love of learning about the world around us. Our science curriculum is designed to nurture inquisitive minds through hands-on investigations, meaningful questions, and real-life contexts. We want our pupils to think like scientists—observing, predicting, experimenting, and drawing conclusions—while developing a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and enquiry skills.

Our goal is for every child to leave Queensgate feeling confident, excited about science, and aware of its impact on everyday life and the future of our planet.

Year 3 Science

Science Intent Statement

Intent

At Queensgate, Science provides children with the opportunity to understand the world around  them and provides an exciting context to apply many of the other skills and disciplines they  learn at school. The science National Curriculum identifies three key areas in which the children  should be taught: knowledge and understanding; working scientifically and the application of  science in the real world.

Our school has a carefully planned science curriculum that ensures  children, from reception to year 6, cover these three aims in an accessible, creative and  engaging way to develop investigative, observational and reporting skills to promote and  develop their independence.

We believe that children learn science best by doing and seeing; by providing the children with  a range of opportunities to actively carry out different types of scientific enquiries, we ensure  that working scientifically and application of knowledge is embedded into the heart of our  science curriculum.

Our school ensures that every child is given the opportunity to enjoy and  make progress in science. In addition, we aim to ignite their curiosity, interest and questioning  skills as this will provide many opportunities for children to apply and deepen their enjoyment, knowledge and understanding of science. By cultivating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, we strive to inspire future  scientists, innovators and global citizens who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and mind  set to contribute positively to our ever changing world.

Science Overview

At Queensgate, our Science Curriculum Coverage is designed to nurture curiosity and develop children’s understanding of the world around them. Each year group explores a range of carefully planned scientific topics that encourage questioning, investigation, and discovery. Through hands-on experiments, observations, and enquiry-based learning, pupils build their knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physics while developing key scientific skills. Our curriculum inspires children to think critically, make connections, and apply their learning to real-world contexts, helping them become confident, inquisitive learners with a lifelong curiosity about how things work.
