D.T.

Working together for a successful future

An Introduction to Design and Technology (D.T.) at Queensgate

At Queensgate Primary School, our Design and Technology (D.T.) curriculum is designed to equip children with the practical skills and creative thinking they need to design, make, and evaluate products for the modern world. From understanding how everyday items are made to developing problem-solving and construction skills, our lessons provide a balanced mix of hands-on and theoretical learning. We focus not only on using tools and materials safely and effectively but also on encouraging children to be innovative, resourceful, and reflective. With access to quality equipment and specialist teaching, pupils build confidence in planning, making, and improving their designs—skills that are essential for their future learning and everyday life.

A Message from Miss Crouteur, our D.T. subject Leader

At Queensgate, we want our children to be practical, imaginative, and inspired—and Design and Technology is the perfect place for that to happen!

In an ever-changing, tech-filled world, D.T. helps our pupils grow into confident, creative thinkers who aren’t afraid to take risks, try new ideas, and solve real-life problems. From designing and building to testing and improving, children develop hands-on skills and technical know-how that prepare them for the future.

We also place a strong focus on nutrition and cooking. From Reception through to Year 6, children take part in regular cookery sessions—learning essential life skills, understanding healthy choices, and having lots of fun in the kitchen!

Through D.T., our pupils become curious, capable, and enterprising learners—ready to take on challenges in the wider world with confidence.

D.T. Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

Intent

Our vision for Design and Technology at Queensgate is that children are given opportunity to be practical, imaginative and inspired. With D.T. becoming increasingly relevant in the technological world we aim for children to feel confident in their ability to take risks, be enterprising and innovative. Children are able to draw on varied disciplines such as maths, science, computing and art in order to create real and relevant solutions to problems. Children will also be instilled with crucial principles of nutrition as well as skills of cooking. This vision is embedded throughout our D.T. curriculum.

D.T. at Queensgate enables children to develop the knowledge and skills they need to gain creative, practical and technical expertise. D.T. supports our children in becoming capable and enterprising citizens that will be able to confidently complete tasks and face challenges in the wider world. Design and Technology also enables children to critique, evaluate and test their ideas allowing them to become resilient and conscientious in their approach to designing and making.

Implement

At Queensgate, our D.T. programme will enable children to meet the End of Key Stage Statements as set out in the Design and Technology Programmes of Study in the 2014 National Curriculum.

How do we deliver D.T. at Queensgate?

  • All pupils have a termly D.T. project that spans 8 hours of learning.
  • Medium term planning is developed by teachers in each year group and reviewed by the D.T. lead. A long term plan is collated by the D.T lead.
  • Our D.T. curriculum is split into three main areas that need to be covered in each project– Design,
    Make and Evaluate.
  • The curriculum also covers 5 areas of technical skill – Materials/Structures, Mechanisms, Textiles, Cooking and Computer Systems.
  • These areas of skill are the same for each year group from Year 1 to Year 6. This ensures that
skills, knowledge and vocabulary are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately.

Impact

We believe that D.T. plays a vital part of primary education and that D.T. is integral to the development of children’s creativity, problem solving and practical skills in order for them to become essential members of society in an ever changing technological world.

By the time children leave Queensgate they will:

  • Generate their own ideas and responses to relevant problems by designing high quality products for a range of users.
  • Have the knowledge and ability to safely and confidently make or cook a range of prototypes of recipes.
  • Have an essential knowledge of nutrition and be able to cook for themselves.
  • Have an understanding of the importance of D.T. and it’s contribution to the nation and our local community.
  • Have the confidence to take risks and be innovative in their approach.
