Working together for a successful future

Supporting Mental Health at Queensgate

At Queensgate, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. We are committed to creating a school environment where every child feels safe, supported, and understood.

We teach children to talk about their feelings, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies. Our staff are trained to recognise when children may need extra support, and we work closely with families and professionals, including the Mental Health Support Team (MHST), to ensure help is always available.

By promoting mental health awareness across the school, we aim to break down stigma, encourage open conversations, and help every child thrive—emotionally, socially, and academically.

The Importance of Good Sleep Hygiene

Getting enough good-quality sleep is essential for both children and adults. At Queensgate Primary, we know that a well-rested child is a happier, more focused learner — and the same goes for parents and carers.

What is sleep hygiene?

Sleep hygiene means having healthy habits and a calm routine around bedtime to help improve the quality of your sleep. It's not just about how long you sleep, but how well you sleep.

Why it matters:

  • Helps children concentrate and learn more effectively in school
  • Supports emotional wellbeing and reduces stress and anxiety
  • Boosts energy and physical health
  • Encourages positive behaviour and resilience

Tips for Better Sleep:

  • Keep to a regular bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine (reading, warm bath, quiet time)
  • Limit screens (phones, tablets, TVs) at least an hour before bed
  • Keep bedrooms cool, quiet and comfortable
  • Avoid sugary snacks or drinks close to bedtime

If you’d like support in building a better sleep routine for your child — or yourself — feel free to contact us. We’re here to help.

ELSA – Emotional Literacy Support at Queensgate

At Queensgate Primary School, we believe that children learn best when they feel safe, understood, and emotionally supported. That’s why we offer ELSA support — a dedicated space for children to explore their feelings and develop emotional resilience.

What is an ELSA?

An Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) is a specially trained member of staff who works with children to help them understand and manage their emotions. Our ELSAs provide one-to-one or small group sessions in a calm, nurturing environment within school.

What does ELSA support cover?

  • Understanding and expressing emotions
  • Building self-esteem and confidence
  • Developing social skills and friendships
  • Managing anxiety or worries
  • Coping with loss, change, or family difficulties
  • Improving emotional regulation

How does it work?

Children are usually referred to ELSA by teachers or pastoral staff when we notice they may need some extra emotional support. We always work closely with families and aim to keep you informed and involved.

Our goal is simple:

To help every child feel listened to, supported, and empowered to face everyday challenges with confidence. If you would like to know more about ELSA support at Queensgate, or feel your child may benefit, please get in touch with us.
