Year 2
Working together for a successful future
Year 2
Year 2 is an exciting and important stage in your child’s learning journey. As the final year of Key Stage 1, children continue to build on the strong foundations laid in Reception and Year 1. Our focus is on developing greater independence, confidence, and key skills in reading, writing, maths, and across the wider curriculum.
In Year 2, children explore engaging topics through a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. We aim to nurture every child’s love of learning while preparing them for the transition to Key Stage 2.
Our supportive and stimulating classroom environment helps children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We work closely with families to ensure all pupils are happy, confident, and making good progress.

Curriculum Letter to Families
Welcome to Year 2! We are excited to begin this new chapter with your child. This year, our aim is to build on the progress made in Year 1 and help children develop increased confidence, independence, and a love of learning.
Our curriculum is broad and engaging, with a strong focus on developing essential skills in reading, writing, and maths, while also exploring exciting topics in science, history, geography, art, and more. Children will be encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, and think creatively.
We also begin gently preparing pupils for the transition to Key Stage 2, fostering positive attitudes and building strong learning habits.

Topic Overview
In Year 2, children explore a variety of exciting topics that inspire curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Through hands-on activities, stories, and investigations, pupils learn about animals and their habitats, local history, plants and growth, famous explorers, seaside environments, and changes over time. These themes support key skills in reading, writing, science, and creativity, making learning both fun and meaningful.

What Our Parents Say About Year 2
"It was lovely to see that Rainie has managed to achieve more academically since last year. I fully understand that she has a lot to catch up on to be level with her peers, but seeing how much she has improved make us, as parents, very proud. Queensgate school is truly amazing and we can not thank you enough for all the support you have given Rainie and to us as parents."
